Basketball

Basketball was proposed to be introduced as a sport to Prep school in 1977 by the Sports Council, but only in 1993 under the guidance of Mr. J.S.L. Fernando did this proposal come into fruition. In 2004, our Under-10 basketball team emerged Runners-Up in the All Island Schools Mini Basketball Tournament. Only in 2015 did Prep school get its own basketball court and this was due to the support extended by the Headmaster at the time, Rev. Dushantha Rodrigo. After the basketball court was built, the popularity of the sport shot up and it became by far the most popular leisure time activity in the school. Many students joined practices and, as a result, the standard of our school basketball team rose. In 2020, the Under-15 team managed to become the Joint Champions at the Karandeniya Invitational All Island Basketball Tournament.

Basketball practices take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.00 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. at the school court. Our school team is coached by Mr. Isuru Perera, who is a member of the National Basketball Team and has represented Sri Lanka at international competitions, most recently the 2019 South Asian Games. The current Master-In-Charge of Basketball is Mr. Devaka Weerasinghe.
