Badminton
Badminton was introduced as a new sport in the year 1977 and it has been very popular among the students ever since.
Practices are held weekly at the Mercantile Badminton Association Court every Monday and Wednesday from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm. School provides students with the transportation facility to the Mercantile Badminton Court soon after school on these days, and they are accompanied by a Teacher-In-Charge. There are two Teachers-In-Charge of Badminton; Mrs. Nishanthi Peiris and Mrs. Nirmala Hariharan, and either both or one of them will remain with the students until practices are over.
Badminton is open to any student from Grade 4 upwards, and practices are conducted under the guidance of our coach Mr. Pradeep Welagedara, who has worked as a National Badminton coach for 10 years. He is also an Olympic coach, a qualified coach for training coaches, a badminton umpire, a lecturer for diploma students at the National Institute of Sports Science, and a qualified coach for the Badminton World Federation level 1 and 2.
The Inter-House Badminton Tournament is conducted annually, and the ‘Best Player’ is selected and awarded at this tournament.
