Message from the School Captain
Originating in 19th-century England and Wales as boarding institutions, preparatory schools are private establishments designed to prepare children for admission into prestigious secondary level public schools. Among these, S. Thomas’ Preparatory School in Kollupitiya stands as one of the first preparatory schools in Sri Lanka, where students embark on an eleven-year journey, emerging as well-groomed young men distinguished from their peers.
As the School Captain, it is my privilege to lead the Prefects’ Guild, a role that embodies a profound journey of transformation. Here, unwavering dedication to service reveals the essence of effective leadership while upholding the cherished traditions and values of our school.
Commonly referred to as “Prep School,” this institution serves as a second home for over 1,100 boys, encouraging them to set themselves apart. To fulfill this objective, the school provides an exceptional education, guided by highly qualified teachers who act as mentors and role models.
Being part of this close-knit community fosters connections among boys of all ages, creating a compassionate and nurturing environment where everyone knows each other. This camaraderie ensures that students learn and grow together, with older peers readily available to lend support when needed.
From our early days at Prep School, we are encouraged to explore and participate in a myriad of sports, clubs, and societies. Unlike many prestigious schools in Sri Lanka, Prep School offers education up to the Ordinary Level, empowering boys to assume leadership roles at remarkably young ages. This unique experience, coupled with interaction and competition alongside advanced-level students, cultivates the future leaders of the world, which is what truly sets this school apart.
Additionally, our distinctive school uniform features a unique design that incorporates house colors into the shirt badges—an uncommon element in school attire. This thoughtful integration fosters easy identification of housemates, strengthening a sense of belonging and community. As students engage in daily activities, this aspect not only promotes friendly competition among houses but also enhances camaraderie and teamwork, enriching their overall school experience.
As we celebrate the 86th anniversary of our school, we must pay tribute to its pioneers: W.T. Keble, Rt. Revd. M. Carpenter Garnier, C.R. De Seram, and the first headmaster, Norman Grey Abeynaike. Their vision is the reason Prep School stands proudly today, beside the shores of Central Colombo.
The Headmaster, Revd. Nihal Fernando, the cornerstone of our school, works relentlessly to uphold its traditions as it moves toward standing for a century. He ensures the punctuality of the students is kept and always makes sure to showcase the hidden talents of the students, allowing them to become the best version of themselves. His passion for upgrading the infrastructure of the school has ensured the safety and well-being of students, which shows his true love for Prep School.
To all who are part of the Prep School family, strive to be the best version of yourself and sustain your difference between the rest of the world. As you recognize the opportunity you received, and how blessed you are to be a part of the rich history of this school, remember, wherever this life takes you, Prep School will always hold a special place in you heart.
