Drama had been a regular fixture in the school from as early as 1939, as is seen through the performances presented at the Annual Kindergarten Exhibition and Concert, Parents’ Days, and End of Term Concerts. The plays were conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English, and students were seen to participate with immense enthusiasm. The School participated in the very popular Inter-School Shakespeare Drama Competition thrice, first in 1951 when they were placed 3rd, second in 2000, and finally in 2015 when they received the award for ‘Best Novice School’ and one of our students, Devinda Perera, received a nomination for ‘Best Actor.’
The Drama Circle of S. Thomas’ Preparatory School was formed in 2016 with the instructor Mrs. Sulochana Dissanyake who arranged regular sessions for the students during that year. Towards 2017, Mr. Lihan Mendis took over as the instructor and has been leading the students up to now. He has truly been through a very long journey, moulding and forming the students of Prep School into great artists in drama and theatre.
As of now, the Drama Club consists of up to 20 active students and practices are conducted after school on Tuesdays and Fridays at the school main hall. The Teacher-In-Charge of the Drama Circle is Mr. Ravindu Huladduwa.
In 2018, the Drama Club of S. Thomas’ Preparatory School participated in their first ever competition, “Drama Comp” which was organized by the Interact Club of Royal College. Janith Dassanayake of our Club won the Award for the Best Female Actor at this competition. The club received a certificate of participation which was a great achievement by our youngsters.
